The ancient mechanics of the block and tackle allow you to exchange force for distance through a system of ropes and pulleys. They are used for many everyday functions to hoist heavy loads, including in construction for lifting heavy materials, in elevators and the rigging on a sailing boat. A single-wheel pulley allows you to lift a load while pulling down on the rope, changing the direction of the force. Add a second wheel to split the weight, allowing you to lift the same load but with half the force – clever stuff!
